Medicate or not? Simple question however it has multiple implications for your health which you may never have considered. We have at our disposal a wide range of medications which will often remove, improve, sedate or change your symptoms. This is the conventional model for treatment and has been driven by consumer demand. “Doctor, I don’t feel well, what can you give me?” scenario. And this has built the entire medical model. Its human nature to not want to feel unwell. But have we really considered the implications? No. Its that simple.

I fully understand the mechanism of the how’s and why’s and if you have chronic pain and symptoms then you cannot live like this. But I am not passing judgment on individual conditions and situations like endometriosis for example that requires painkillers. I am talking big picture here and the development of disease. Not management of chronic conditions.
My comment is if symptoms where seen as warning signs in the first place and the causative factors investigated, then the progression of the condition or the gradual worsening of symptoms would not progress. I take the example of children with fevers. If you use paracetamol for any low grade fever or even to help children sleep because they are in discomfort then your immune system does not learn to manage the febrile process and the child ends up running very high fevers on a regular basis.
Another example for women is the contraceptive pill. Teenagers develop painful periods and the pill is prescribed. Pain goes away sometimes by a blanket coverage of hormones. Underlying the issue are poor hormone excretion, poor diet and nutrient deficiencies. The cause is not treated but symptoms suppressed. The pathogenesis continues until probable diagnosis of endometriosis, PCOS or a wide range of other hormonal symptoms.
Our bodies do not produce symptoms because they don’t like you. They produce symptoms because there is an imbalance, excretion or detoxification issue or faulty mechanism. We have created this disconnect with our body and the signs and symptoms it produces.
The human body will remain symptom free if you give it the correct environment to function. As a society we have become disconnected from cause and effect. If I eat a bad diet and don’t exercise, become stressed and then get a headache then this is not considered. We continue to refine and process our food chain and wonder why we don’t feel well and have a range of symptoms.
If two individuals are given the exact same unhealthy diet and lifestyle. They will develop different sets of symptoms and diseases. How is this possible? Genetics. If those same individuals are given the correct, healthy diet and lifestyle they will both recover and lead a healthy life. But if their symptoms are merely suppressed then their genetic weaknesses will progress and eventually their health goes beyond recovery.
The human body has a very powerful, intelligent and effective healing mechanism. And all you need to do is give it the right environment to heal itself. Listen to your symptoms as guiding posts of what is occurring underneath. Don’t disconnect from your symptoms and try to suppress them at any cost.
How do natural remedies then fit into this picture. Well herbal medicines for example act as catalysts to encourage the bodies own biological function. Milk thistle encourages healthy liver function. Vitex and black cohosh regulate endocrine function. They are either balancers or stimulators of natural functions. This is very different to conventional drugs which are forceful. Sometimes this is needed but usually in end case scenarios. Nutritional medicines like minerals for example replace deficiencies usually either present through genetic anomalies or through diet and lifestyle.
Symptoms however should be seen as signposts to the cause of the problem. Ask the question, “why is my body doing this” and you start to get to the cause of the issue. Most often its because we have not consumed a healthy lifestyle and also because of multiple symptom suppression in the past. Embrace your symptoms and start to find the path to recovery using your own inbuilt mechanisms.
We have created our free hormonal symptom profile to show ladies how their symptoms are linked to a hormonal imbalance. From there if you start to work towards balancing the endocrine imbalance which controls hormone levels you eventually find the solution to your issues. Treat the cause and not the symptoms.
