In a recent study conducted but the Washington State University they have shown that Resveratrol, a substance found in high concentrations in berries, grapes and other fruits can assist in weight loss.
The study was performed on mice who where fed a diet containing resveratrol at .01 percent concentrations . This diet allowed the mice to change their excess white fat into the active, energy-burning beige fat. In the study, adult female mice were fed a high-fat diet. Those supplemented with resveratrol were 40 percent less likely to develop diet-induced obesity compared to control mice that gained weight.
The body has 3 types of fat. White, beige and brown. Diets rich in resveratrol from blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes and apples enhances the oxidation of dietary fats converting them from white fat to beige fat. 340gms or 12 ounces is the human equivalent which is about two or three servings per day.
So where does that leave wine as a weight loss substance? Unfortunately wines like merlot or cabernet sauvignon contain only a fraction of resveratrol and other phenolic compounds found in grapes.
“Many of the beneficial polyphenols are insoluble and get filtered out during the wine production process,” says Professor of animal sciences Min Du who was in charge of the study.
