Why is fitness so important? There are many reasons however I am about to tell you why exercise is REALLY so important.

Obviously our bodies where meant to move. Its just part of our DNA and design. Exercise influences our lymph flow, digestion and circulation simply through the process of movement. Our bodies just need it from a mechanical perspective. Studies are not showing how sitting for extended periods can be worse than smoking for the body.

This is important but its not the most important reason. The number one reason exercise and being physically fit is because of some little organisms in our body called MITOCHONDRIA. Now before you start to zone out because of the complicated nature of what is to come, I will keep it simple. Mitochondria exist in every cell in the body and they product energy. They are the most important organelle for our survival. Without them we die as the fundamental process of energy production is critical for our every bodily process.

So mitochondria product energy from food basically. Every cell in our body has them and depend on these mitochondria to perform there basic function. So no matter what cell, whether its brain cells, heart cells, endocrine cells or digestive cells, they require mitochondria to produce energy from the food we eat for their optimal function.

If you do not eat the right food then instantly they suffer and your cells don’t produce enough energy and disease starts to develop.

And cells up regulate or down regulate the number of mitochondria depending upon nutrition and energy demands. When you exercise and start to improve your physical fitness the mitochondria numbers increase in response to allow you to perform better, i.e your fitness levels increase. Your body produces more mitochondria to allow for the energy demands of the exercise or activity.

You are probably thinking, great, but what has this got to do with my overall health? Well here is the secret. You cannot exercise all day right? So when you are not using the additional mitochondria for exercise, your body will use the extra energy production for health. To heal itself and to function optimally. The increased mitochondria numbers in your heart allow it to function better, the increased mitochondria in all your muscles function better, even in your digestive tract, brain, endocrine glands and virtually every cell in your body can function better.

This is the secret and why you feel so much better after 9 days of exercise. And if you continue to build your physical fitness gradually without exhausting yourself then you have all the extra mitochondria and energy at your disposal to heal and allow your body to function properly. And its so important for endocrine balance and hormonal balance as a result.

So don’t focus on exercise for the sake of exercise or weight management. Now you know that the process of getting physically fit impacts on your total wellbeing. So keep it consistent, regular and fun.
